Carers Week 2017: it's good to talk
13 June 2017

Carers in Redbridge are being encouraged to use the free and confidential NHS Talking Therapies service to feel better if they are struggling to cope.

Carers Week 2017 (12-18 June) is turning the national spotlight on the vital contribution made by the 6.5 million people across the UK who provide unpaid care for a disabled, ill or older relative or friend.

Although caring can be a rewarding experience, many carers can face financial worries, stress or difficulty sleeping, and this can leave them feeling low.

However, carers in Redbridge are being reminded: you’re not alone.

Talking Therapies is a free and confidential NHS service that works with you to help you feel better. It offers expert support from people who know what you’re experiencing. You don’t need to see your GP, just visit the website or call 0300 300 1554 for more information and to speak to the team of experts.

The specialist NHS team will introduce you to effective tools and techniques that are proven to work. Whether your issues are caused by problems you face every day, or by events that have happened in your past, Talking Therapies can help.

Thousands of people in Redbridge have already used Talking Therapies, and those who have used the service say it has helped them feel like themselves again.

Local GP and chair of Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Dr Anil Mehta, said: “Carers are usually very generous with their own time but looking after a loved one or friend is not easy, and it’s important to remember that help is at hand.

“We can all feel stressed, down or anxious at times but if you’re a carer and things are getting too much, you don’t need to cope alone – Talking Therapies can help.

“People can sometimes be unsure whether talking therapy is right for them, but we know it works and I’d urge people to give it a try.

“If you are a carer, it is important to let your GP know this as there may be additional help or support available that we can direct you to.”

Talking Therapies is available to people aged 18 and over who live in the borough. It is commissioned by Redbridge CCG and provided by NELFT NHS Foundation Trust.

Carers Week 2017 is co-organised by eight major charities, to celebrate and recognise the vital contribution made by carers across the UK. More information on the week can be found here.
