With the summer holidays upon us, it’s wise to take a moment to look after your health so you can make the most of a warm summer. Most of us will be hoping for warm, sunny days, but it’s important to remember that hot weather can impact our health if we don’t take precautions.

Thankfully, most of these are fairly straightforward. It is important to regularly apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30, and seek out shade between 11am-3pm when the sun is at its strongest in the UK. The longer, warmer days also make exhaustion or dehydration more likely, so it’s vital to stay hydrated.

Many insects love the warm weather as much as humans, and so bites and stings are more common in the summer months. Most can be treated with simple first-aid measures, such as applying a cold flannel or taking antihistamines as a cream or hay fever tablets. But, if you suffer a severe allergic reaction, please do seek urgent advice from NHS 111 or your GP.

Barbecues are obviously popular at this time of year, but no one enjoys food poisoning! Follow a few simple steps to prevent this, including checking meat is fully cooked before eating, washing your hands with soap after handling raw food and ensuring cold food is refrigerated.
